• Influenza (the flu) is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death.
• Anyone can get sick from the flu, but certain people are at greater risk for serious complications from the flu, including: older people, young children, pregnant women, and people with chronic lung disease, diabetes, neurologic conditions and certain other long-term health conditions.
• Even healthy children and adults can get very sick from the flu and spread it to family and friends.
• Flu vaccine is recommended for all people over 6 months old for the 2010-2011 season.
• The first and most important step in protecting against the flu is to get a flu vaccine. The vaccine will protect you through the entire flu season.
• The 2010-2011 flu vaccine will protect against the most common influenza viruses, including the H1N1 (swine flu) virus that we were all concerned about last year.
• You need to get the 2010-11 seasonal flu vaccine even if you got the 2009 H1N1 flu vaccine or the seasonal flu vaccine last season.
• Here is more information from Maine CDC about influenza and flu shots: http://www.maine.gov/dhhs/boh/maineflu/
